A Very Chinoiserie Christmas: Featuring Blue, Green, and White as a Non-Traditional Holiday Color Story

I love the Chinoiserie trend, and I love it even more for Christmas. Blue, green, and white are non-traditional colors that bring a different aesthetic and color story for the holidays that is calming and inviting. This aligns with the more modern Grandmillenial trends of incorporating antiques and ceramic blue vases filled with flowers and other botanicals.

The Chinoiserie design trend includes blue and white ceramics and art. It embraces and embodies East Asian artistic styles, loosely. The ceramics and designs often feature detailed illustrations of landscapes and florals.

Blue is a calming color that I love incorporating into design and decor. While red and green are traditional Christmas colors, they are not my favorite combination in excess. I prefer to go heavier on greenery with subtle accents of red, such as magnolia leaves paired with holly berries or cranberries with rosemary. Adding elements of blue, however, has been my favorite approach.

For example, my living room features navy and white, and during Christmas, I love combining green and navy for a unique twist. Blue and green are less traditional for the holidays, as red tends to dominate this time of year.

From a color theory perspective, blues and greens are considered analogous colors because they sit next to each other on the color wheel, creating harmony. Meanwhile, red and green are complementary colors because they sit opposite each other on the wheel, creating bold contrast.
