The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
It’s September, which means it’s officially fall! September basically marks the start of a new year and new season in the academic world. As mentioned in my last post, I wanted to introduce some books set in the academic world. First up is The Love Hypothesis.
THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS
Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis was so good! This was actually my Book of the Month pick for September 2021. I love Hazelwood’s writing. She is known for her STEMinist genre of books.
REVIEW
I loved this book. Olive is a lowly graduate student in the biology department at Stanford University. She meets Adam. A quintessential person in academia who is hard to work with but also brilliant. Olive awkwardly kisses Adam when her friend sees her at the lab so that she will know she is not interested in Jeremy, her latest ex. The friend likes him but doesn’t think Olive is over him yet. She’s trying to convince her friend she has moved on. The plot continues with Adam and Olive starting a mutually beneficial fake dating relationship.
“Hypothesis: Adam Carlsen and I have absolutely nothing in common, and having coffee with him will be twice as painful as a root canal. Without anesthesia.”
— Olive, The Love Hypothesis (Hazelwood 68)
I loved the setting of a character in grad school. I did my master’s in social work and although it wasn’t in STEM, I feel like Ali Hazelwood’s captured so much of the nuances of grad school and the challenges it poses. There are some content warnings (sexual harassment) to be aware of before reading this book.
RATING
This is 5 stars and a definite recommend!
Highly recommend it and would absolutely read it again.
The Love Hypothesis is available through a Book of the Month subscription box.
CURRENTLY READING
I’m currently reading Beartown by Fredrik Backman. I love his books, and this one was made into an HBO series. I started a new audiobook about an audiobook narrator, Thank You for Listening. I’ve only heard good reviews on this one!
UP NEXT
I have a 2022 book release to share that continues the academic theme. I just got my Book of the Month box for September and I got Ali Hazelwood’s new book, Love on the Brain, a new release for September 2022.
