New Pattern: Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias

Zinnias are one of my favorite cut flowers! They are easy to grow and have such a wide range of colors, making a great color story for a pattern! Zinnias are probably one of my most illustrated floral motifs since we grow them every year. My new pattern, Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias is the pattern I am using in my new website redesign, and I made this pattern available in my Spoonflower shop for fabric and home decor.

Zinnia Inspiration from the Garden

I love gathering inspiration from nature for patterns and illustrations. We found the most adorable farm cart on a trip back home to North Carolina. I loved the zinnias for sale!

I love zinnia arrangements for bouquets. I dry them too!

Pattern Design

My process for designing a pattern is to gather inspiration and start illustrating motifs. I illustrate before deciding on a color palette. Once I am ready to build the pattern block, I may start finalizing the color palette so I can see which colors look best next to one another. Check out my blog post, How to Create a Custom Color Palette in Adobe Illustrator Using a Photo, on how I create my own custom color palettes.

Color Palette

I love bright colors when I design a pattern. I use different colorways with the same pattern, but I tend to gravitate towards making my original pattern in bright hues that reflect the flowers I use as inspiration for the design. I use the Recolor Artwork tool in Adobe Illustrator to play with hue and saturation to get the right colors I envision for the pattern.

I tend to like color palettes that are reminiscent of the vintage floral prints of the 1950’s to 1970’s. It creates a retro-type vibe for the pattern that came through in my Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias Pattern.

Motifs

Here are my finalized motifs with the color palette I chose.

Pattern Block

For floral patterns, I love to fill my pattern block with the motifs and create a really full design. I used a fuchsia background color for the Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias Pattern. For patterns like this one, white and black backgrounds are also good options to make the motifs really pop.

Available on Spoonflower

I am loving this pattern on fabric! The colors are so vibrant. It would be a great design for home decor projects, such as pillows, curtains, bedding, table linens, and women’s and children’s clothing. Shop the Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias Pattern on Spoonflower.

There are also home decor products already available through Spoonflower. The Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias Placemats are available here. The Pink, Yellow, and Orange Zinnias Round Tablecloth is available here.

New Website Redesign

I always love using a signature seamless repeat pattern for my branding. After I updated my logo, I wanted to reinvigorate my website and have a more cohesive presence on my website. I use this pattern as a background for my website banners and footer.
